God is Real

The most basic part of winning someone to Christ is first establishing the existences of God.

Seems simplistic right? But face it. If people do not believe in God then they will never really believe that our faith is anything but us manipulating them to get our way.

Bill Maher, host of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, comments on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country.

“all Christians are crazy and are unenlightened because of their faith.”

“We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion…I think that religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think that flying planes in a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder. If you look at it logically, it’s something that was drilled into your head when you were a small child.”

Why do people think this way?

1 Cor 1:18

18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things – and the things that are not – to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Can the non-believers prove that God does not exist?

Job 12:7-9

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

Albert Einstein

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

Is he right? Are faith and science mutually exclusive ideas?  Can you have both a belief in science and God?

“Bright Evening” – Madeleine L’Engle

Einstein Said; “Anyone who’s not lost in rapturous awe at the power and glory of the mind behind the universe is as good as a burnt-out candle.” And I thought, “Oh, I’ve found my theologian, what a wonderful thing.”

The BIG BANG

The genome (project) changes everything… Matt Ridley

Surely those prove there is not God.

“Science vs. Religion?”

RELIGION says

Q: So where did everything come from?

A: It all came from God creating it.

Q: Okay then, where’d god come from?

A: He/She/It just exists.

Q: But that’s lame!

A: You must have faith. Stop asking questions. Support our roof-repair fund. Don’t have sex or wear funny clothing. Stop doing fun things.

SCIENCE says

Q: So where did everything come from?

A: It all came from a big bang.

Q: Okay then, where’d the big bang come from?

A: Well, we dunno. Maybe from a big crunch, but before that there was ANOTHER big bang… and, well, we’re looking into it. We think we can find out one day.

Q: But that’s lame!

A: We know! Give us more money and we’ll see if we can get a better answer.

Funny they would mention the Human Genome Project because Francis Collins, a molecular biologist who is head of the National Human Genome Research Institute, the federal government part of the sequencing project, is a devout Christian and a leading member of the American Scientific Affiliation, the 3,000-member organization for scientists who are actively religious.

He also had this to say:

‘Wow, only God knew this before.’

“It is a profoundly beautiful and moving sensation, which helps me appreciate God and makes science even more rewarding for me.”

“In my field, biology, the standard assumption is that anyone with faith has gone soft in the head. But I don’t check my brains at the door when I go to church.”

“When a scientist describes himself as a believer, the first reaction among colleagues may be, ‘How did this guy get tenure?'”–essentially for turf reasons. “Scientists are taught to believe that the data will eventually yield all answers,”

“I especially worry about this galloping stampede to reductionism in my field, where the rush is on to attribute everything, even personality traits, to DNA. This is patently ridiculous. Reductionist explanations of human consciousness fly in the face of everything else we know about the subject.”

“I would not expect religion to be the right tool for sequencing the human genome and by the same token would not expect science to be the means to approaching the supernatural. But on the really interesting larger questions, such as ‘Why are we here?’ or ‘Why do human beings long for spirituality?,’ I find science unsatisfactory. Many superstitions have come into existence and then faded away. Faith has not, which suggests it has reality.”

Can you prove that God Exist?

Job 12:7-9

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

Did Jesus exist?

Here is what history has to say.

http://www.tektonics.org/

Tacitus was a Roman historian writing early in the 2nd century A.D:

Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius: but the pernicious superstition, repressed for a time broke out again, not only through Judea, where the mischief originated, but through the city of Rome also, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their center and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind.

Josephus ends up being a rich source for confirmation of the Gospel record:

Antiquities 20.9.1 But the younger Ananus who, as we said, received the high priesthood, was of a bold disposition and exceptionally daring; he followed the party of the Sadducees, who are severe in judgment above all the Jews, as we have already shown. As therefore Ananus was of such a disposition, he thought he had now a good opportunity, as Festus was now dead, and Albinus was still on the road; so he assembled a council of judges, and brought before it the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ, whose name was James, together with some others, and having accused them as law-breakers, he delivered them over to be stoned

1.    Jesus had a brother named James, who was an important member of the church;

2.    Jesus was a wise and virtuous man;

3.    Jesus had disciples, both among the Jews and Gentiles. Although Meier regards the latter as retorjectory in nature, we may suggest that it is something that simply lacked emphasis in the Gospels.

4.    Jesus was called “Christ” by some.

5.    Jesus was a worker of surprising deeds – an allusion perhaps to miracle-working power.

6.    Jesus was executed by Pilate by means of crucifixion.

7.    His execution was prompted in part by the leaders among the Jews.

8.    Christians were “named” from Him – which confirms Tacitus’ own usage of the terminology.

Lucian, considered an early Monty Python / Playwrite (second Century) –

About the Christians in one of his plays: “Then, too, their first lawgiver persuaded them that they are all brothers…after they have thrown over and denied the gods of Greece and have done reverence to that crucified sophist himself and live according to his laws.”

OK, Now What?

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son”. But more and more often casual believers in Jesus have quoted the second half of that verse, “whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

OK, so once we achieve step one… Belief.

Now what?

What did Jesus mean by believe?

In John 14 Jesus is addressing his disciples and spends a great deal of time instructing them and comforting them. During this chapter Jesus mentions over and over again what he means by believing in him:

·       12”I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.

·       21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”

·       23Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.

Jesus also comments on those who only believe with their minds and not their hearts:

Mathew 5:8-9   8 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  9They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.”

John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. “
(Whole Chapter: John 12 In context: John 12:45-47)

This is not Club Jesus!

Matthew 7:20-24 (The Message)

21″Knowing the correct password–saying “Master, Master,’ for instance–isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience–doing what my Father wills. 22I can see it now–at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, “Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ 23And do you know what I am going to say? “You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here.’

24″These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock.

This is not Club Jesus! If he is Real…

You must treat him with at least the respect that you treat other REAL Beings.

1) If he is the “All seeing, all knowing, creator of the universe” then treat him like he is.

2) If he is your “Father” ….

3) If he is your “Brother” …

4) If you believe in his mission then support it.

5) If you believe he is real then God knows everything about you.  Thought, word, and deed. Yes, that too…

If he is real at Church then he is real all the time…
